Is Windows 11 Video Editor Of Any Use?

The Windows 11 video editor is a simple tool, and it won’t allow you to do complex projects, but the simplicity of it means it’s great for beginners.

Bear in mind that the editor might change in future updates, but it should be similar enough for you to still follow along.

If you have any questions about any of the features that I mention today, or ones that I might have missed then let me know in the comments below.

Let’s get started.

How Do I Launch Video Editor On Windows 11?

We of course need to begin by opening the editor, you can do that by simply searching for video editor in the search bar.

How To Use Windows 11 Video Editor?

When the video editor loads, you should have this screen here. If you go to where it says new video project, this is where we can begin our project.

The first thing we need to do is give our video a name. Of course, you’ll want to put this something relevant to the video, so you know which one it is in the future.

You can skip this, but I would recommend giving it a name, and once you’ve given it the name, click on OK.

We’re now on the main dashboard for the video editor, and I’ll go through each of the features step by step and try and keep it simple enough for you to follow.

We’ll be making a simple project today in order to improve your understanding but the skills you’ve learned should be able to be applied to more complex projects.

We’re first going to go to this add button here in the top left and click on this. This will allow us to add our first piece of content.

After clicking on add, we need to choose where we want to get the content from. If the files are saved on your PC, you can choose this top option.

So after navigating to the file I want to add I’ve double clicked on it and its added it here.

This is our project library so this is not actually in our video yet. We’ll be able to do that a little later on.

It might be worth getting all of the pieces of content you want to add in this section first before moving on.

You can add another clip by going to add again. I’ve now got one video and image in the project library. And as mentioned I’ll keep as simple as possible but you can obviously add as many as you want.
When it comes to adding in our video or images, we can select them both or just select one to add it.

Select it by clicking on it and then we’ll drag it in to our storyboard. The first thing we can do with our added video is change the volume here.

Now that we have it selected in the storyboard we can also customize this separate piece of video.

Intro You’ll see the list of options here that we can do. We can change the speed, add some filters and even more.

We first might want to trim portions of our video we add. And again you can do this for all the videos you add in future but we’ll just use this example.

Click on trim and then it’ll take you to a preview page. You can see with the scroll bar here that we can move through the video and then to trim it we can drag the ends of the video here.

You might want to select just a small portion of the video and that can be done quite easily. With the trimmed portion selected, click on the done button in the bottom right.

We can also split our video clip, this is the option next to trim. After clicking on split, we have the option to drag this cursor where we want to split the video and you can see the clip timings in the top right.

If we click on done now, you’ll see we’ve got two separate pieces of video. We can add text over the top of the video with the text button here.

If you go on that, we can first begin typing our text in the top right, choose our animated text style and then the layout of where we want it to appear on the video.

With a simple piece of text added, we can select our text style. You can see how that looks in the preview here.

We can change the duration that the text will be onscreen by dragging these cursors here at the bottom.

If you press the spacebar or click on the play button here, you’ll be able to preview how the text appears.

Click on done once you’re happy with this and now we’ll move onto the motion option. Again, make sure you have the video you want to add these to selected.

Within the motion tab, we can change how the video would move. If we select pan right, you can see how the video moves on the screen.

Again, select done once you’re happy with this and now we’ll move onto the 3D effects option.

You don’t have to use all of these options of course it’s up to you, but we’ll be going through all of them just so you know how they work.

3D effects will allow you to add some of the presets over the top of your video. If you don’t see the effects to add, make sure you select effects up here in the top right and then you can choose one of the options.

After selecting an effect, you’ll be able to edit it in the edit tab. Most of the effects will be slightly different and allow you to customize it in different ways.

For example, with this breaking news one, we can move the size of it around, the position and the rotation as well.

You can make it attach to the point of a video if you want as well. It might take a while to do this and you can change the volume that it’ll appear.

Remember you can always press play to preview how it looks and of course it doesn’t look great on this because of the blur that we added but that’s okay.

I’ve just gone back and removed the text so we’ll have a better look of how this works so if we preview it again, you’ll see how it appears.

You can change the duration it’s onscreen, again by moving these cursors down here so now if we go to preview it, it’ll only appear for this set amount of time.

There might be more 3D effects you can find and you can search for this in the 3D library.

Again, click on done once you’ve added your effects. The filters section is nice and simple if you choose that, you can simply add a colour filter to add over your video or image.

You can preview how they look by selecting them here.

Clicking on speed allows you to change clip speed so we can have it all the way up to 64 times faster or 0.02 times.

Of course, you can see how that has changed the duration of the video here. It’s gone from a few seconds to a few minutes.

The final three options relate to the black bars that you can add, the rotation of the video and of course you can delete the video here. You can clear the storyboard with the option at the end as well.

Now it’s important to mention that you can apply all of the effects that we’ve just done with a video on an image, so that should cover you for just about every piece of content you want to add.

Again, it’s important to mention that you don’t need to add all of these, just add the ones you want.

Now our video might need a title at the beginning. This can be done by clicking on add title card here.

If you click on that, it will add the title card before the clip that we’ve selected so if you want this to be at the beginning of your video, you need to select the first clip.
With our title card selected, we can change the duration here and we can change the text by clicking on it.

You’ll notice how to customize the text is exactly the same as it was for when adding it over video.

If you want to change the background colour, this can be done by clicking on the tab at the top and then you can choose one of the colours or choose a custom colour here.

The default duration will be three seconds, so I probably would recommend changing that here and increasing it. You can preview at any time by pressing on play.

We can add background music or custom audio here at the top. If you click on background music, you’ll be able to choose one of the default sounds.

You can always preview them by pressing on play and change the volume here.

Select one and click on done once you are happy with the settings and it will add it to the video. You can also add custom audio by clicking on this, and then you’ll need to click on add the audio file and navigate to where the file is stored on your PC.

With the custom audio added, it will appear here in the timeline. You can trim the length of the audio and also change the position of it as well.

You might not be able to make the audio longer in some cases, depending on the length of it. Click on done once you’re happy with this.

Now currently there is no way to add transitions between videos and photos which is unfortunate.

A way around this might be to use the motion option here and use some of the pans to make it look like we are transitioning between videos and photos.

This might be something that’s added in the future, and it shouldn’t be too complicated to add it in.

I’d imagine that it would be an option here and you’d be able to choose the one you want to add to the selected video.

Now that we’ve added everything we wanted and customized it all in the storyboard, got it in the right order, we’re ready to export the video.

To do this, we need to go to finish video here in the top right.

After clicking on that, we need to first select the video quality. It should default to 1080p which is the highest quality currently available.

If you click on more options you’ll be able to turn on hardware-accelerated encoding which might make it faster for you.

After clicking on export, it will likely open the pictures folder, and you can give it another custom name in here and then click on export once you’ve done. Allow the video to export and once it’s done you’ll be able to watch it back and play it.

Now apologies for this… disaster of a video but this was only the example in today’s video so hopefully you’ve found it helpful.

And so that is how to use the built in video editor in Windows 11 on a PC or laptop.
